Autumn is one of the best times to visit Wisconsin. While the weather is still warm enough to enjoy the vast outdoors, visitors can take in the changing fall colors while enjoying the use of an ATV rental or hiking through the Ocooch Mountains. Not only is fall a good time to enjoy Wisconsin’s many natural resources, but visitors can also check out the World Dairy Expo at the Alliant Energy Center in Madison, WI.
The World Dairy Expo is a one-of-a-kind fall event that has been held in Wisconsin since 1967. Typically scheduled for the first week of October (in 2009, it’ll be 9/29 – 10/3), the Expo showcases dairy cattle and various advances in the dairy industry. Admission is only $8.00 per day, or $25.00 for the entire five-day event, and parking is free.
While the Expo is geared towards those working in the dairy industry, there are plenty of things for visitors to see and do. There are awards shows for each different breed of cow, including Jersey, Holstein, and Guernsey, as well as other judging contests, such as a milking contest and various 4H contests.
Visitors can also take in displays by over 700 companies, like John Deere, Land’O'Lakes, and more, demonstrating their newest products as well as general advancements in the industry. Additionally, the World Dairy Expo offers educational seminars and virtual farm tours, so attendees can learn more about the industry and see how different dairy farms operate across the world.
In 2008, the World Dairy Expo had over 68,000 visitors, so anyone interested in attending in 2009 would be wise to book their hotels and flights ASAP. If you’re interested in going but just can’t make it to the 2009 Expo, it’s certainly not too early to start planning for 2010, which is scheduled for September 28 – Oct 2nd. In fact, the World Dairy Expo already has dates scheduled through 2016! The great news is that Wisconsin has many great places to visit, and the natural beauty is unsurpassed. Many folks take advantage of being in the great outdoors and rent an ATV while they are there…good times and good fun!
