The great state of Wisconsin is known for its cheese-loving ways, but did you know this state has more than just dairy? In fact, WI has some of the best ATV (all-terrain vehicle) trails in the area, including the Cheese Country Trail. We think you might be amiss if you don’t check it out!
Located in Iowa County (not far from Madison, WI), the Cheese Country Trail follows what once was an abandoned railway line that made its way through the beautiful rolling Wisconsin countryside. Filled with hills, valleys, bridges, and waterways, this WI ATV trail runs for 47 miles through several Wisconsin towns, including the trail head locations of Monroe and Mineral Point.
You may want to start your ATV journey in Mineral Point, just about an hour’s drive from where you can pick up your WI ATV rental in Madison. This trail head is quite popular with ATVers, due perhaps to its historic coal-mining roots and ideal location. From this starting point, you can easily enjoy the entire trail, but don’t forget to make a stop in Darlington to refuel and grab a bite to eat. And at the trail’s end in Monroe, you will want to stop in at the Historic Cheesemaking Center to hear the story of how making cheese put Monroe and Wisconsin on the map.
The Cheese Country Trail is open year-round, except when there is snow on the ground. So, your best bet for good trail conditions may be spring, summer, and fall. Also, you will want to note that there is a $15 user fee before you can ride the trail; however, you will be given a Cheese Country Trail Sticker that allows you to ride again and again.
For you first-time or easy-does-it ATV trail riders, the Cheese Country Trail is perfect for you, because it is ranked an easy trail (but no less fun, mind you). When you are just starting out, you will appreciate trails like this one so you can get a feel for off-road riding, which can make your experience safer and more fun in the long run.
Also, whether you own your own ATV or not, you may want to look into ATV rentals Wisconsin. Lugging your ATVs and finding proper places to store them once you get to WI can be a chore, so renting may be your best option for a stress-free vacation.
Have we whet your appetite for cheese country? Are you ready for an off-road ATV-experience that sends chills of excitement up and down your spine and (quite literally) gets your motor running? If so, then Madison, Wisconsin is where you need to be.
