If you are headed to the San Diego, California area for your next vacation, what better what to enjoy this coastal city than to take a long, relaxing cruise along their 59-Mile Scenic Drive. While you can finish the entire route in about three hours, we recommend setting aside an entire day (or two!) to take the drive, so you can stop at will, take in the sights, and just enjoy your day on the open road.
Just picture yourself, driving through San Diego, CA and soaking in the rays as a gentle breeze from your open car window blows across your face. You take a deep breath and let it out slowly, feeling refreshed. You have no agenda but to gaze at the local scenery, and perhaps stop for a relaxing meal or a little shopping (if you so choose).
In case you took a flight into San Diego or you just don’t want to put the extra miles on your own vehicle, we recommend taking advantage of a San Diego car rental. This way, you can enjoy this California Scenic Drive without the extra stress and strain. All you will have to do is pick up your rental and go!
So where does this 59-mile Scenic Drive start? While you can see the blue and yellow signs, illustrated with a seagull, all over the city, you will want to either print out directions from the San Diego Convention and Visitor’s Bureau website prior to leaving. You never know when a sign might be turned or missing.
Your journey will begin at Embarcadero, at the corner of West Broadway and Harbor Drive. There is a visitor’s bureau located right on the northeast corner of this intersection, so you may want to stop in a grab a guide before you go. From there, this Scenic Drive takes you to over 27 attractions all around the greater San Diego area.
A few destination include:
- Cabrillo National Monument – this landmark includes the Old Point Loma lighthouse. Although the lighthouse is no longer functioning, it is open to visitors.
- Mission Bay Aquatic Park – this 4,600-acre park has over 27 beautiful California beaches for visitors and locals to enjoy. Whether or not you choose to take a dip yourself, you can watch the many wind surfers and catamarans from this location.
- Mission Beach – this CA community has a great many things to offer visitors. You can swim, enjoy a seaside restaurant along the boardwalk, or even take a ride on a roller coaster!
- San Diego Zoological Gardens – while the San Diego Zoo should be a day trip in and of itself, you can at least drive by and admire the surrounding Balboa Park area, with its museums, lush gardens, and much more.
Granted, this 59-mile drive has many more things to see along the way, as you cruise along in your San Diego rental car. You may choose to stop at none or a few, but you will be glad you took the drive. There may be no better way to soak in this California city’s sights!
