Most people travel to the New Jersey East Coast and Newark area for some beach fun at the well-known NJ beach cities. However, what do you do if the sky clouds up and lets rain loose for a day or more? In this post, we will try to offer you some ideas of how to still have a great vacation in the Newark area, even if the weather is not beach friendly.
If you are traveling alone or with primarily adults, then you may be interested in some New Jersey museums or art galleries. A few you may want to check out include the Visual Arts Center of New Jersey, located in Summit, NJ. This art museum has rotating art exhibitions designed to “bring art and people together,” displaying art from emerging artists, independent curators, established artists, and more.
Just a half hour’s drive in your passenger van rental from Newark to Morristown, you might also enjoy the Morris Museum. This museum’s goal is to promote cultural awareness and quality of life through visual and performing arts, the humanities, and science by featuring exhibits, performances, and various educational resources. Current exhibits include everything from quilts to photography to dinosaurs and more.
If art or museums aren’t your thing, then maybe you would like to visit one of NJ’s own Lambert Castle in Paterson, New Jersey (less than 30 minutes from Newark). Built in 1892, the Lambert Castle was designed after English architecture and now includes both a museum and library. This castle would make a great adventure on a rainy day.
If you are traveling as a family, your kids will probably enjoy the Lambert Castle, but you may also want to check out a few of these other options, which are easily accessed in your 12 passenger van rental:
- Liberty Science Center (Jersey City, NJ)
- The Ripley’s Believe It or Not! Museum (Atlantic City, NJ)
- Kid·netic (Montville, NJ)
- NJ Adventure Aquarium (Camden, NJ)
- Kid Junction (two locations, which include Mount Laurel, NJ or Brachburg, NJ)
Other rainy day ideas in New Jersey including shopping in one of New Jersey’s many shopping centers or malls. You may also want to go to a local movie theatre and see a feature film or simply stay inside and read a good book. No matter what you decide to do, you can rest assure that there are plenty of rainy day diversions to have a fun and festive vacation. There’s much more to New Jersey than the beach.
