In our last post, we mentioned riding off-road trails on an ATV rental near Burt Lake in Michigan. Maybe you’re thinking, “Hey, that sounds like fun!” but you don’t want to travel to Michigan? Or maybe you’ve been there, done that. Well, why don’t you try another Midwestern state for some off-road action?
Wisconsin’s Buffalo River State Trail is one of many ATV trails you can enjoy in the middle of Cheese Country. This multi-use trail is located in Trempealeau in west-central Wisconsin, just under a three-hour drive from the Madison, WI area. So if you’re flying into Madison and want to make a day trip to enjoy the WI ATV trails, then Buffalo River State Trail may be a good bet for you.
Following the picturesque Buffalo River valley, the Buffalo River State Trail is 36.4 miles long and features wooded areas, babbling waters, wetlands, farmlands, and more. The trail winds its way through the communities of Eleva, Strum, and Osseo. You can enter the trail at many points, so to determine which destination best fits your purposes, be sure to download the Buffalo River State Trail map from the Wisconsin DNR website.
If you are flying into Madison, Wisconsin for your ATV getaway, we recommend that you pick up one or more WI ATV rentals locally. That way, if you decide to spend one day at the Buffalo River State Trail, but want to check out other trails for additional off-road experiences, you can do that too. Plus, the Madison area has a lot more to offer you when you are not out on the trail, including live music, shopping entertainment, restaurants, and lodging. All in all, choosing the Madison area as your hub of adventure is probably a good bet.
Whether you get an ATV rental in Wisconsin or bring your own off-road vehicle, you can be sure that you will enjoy the Buffalo River State Trail. This trail was named after the Buffalo River and the surrounding area that was once inhabited by bison. Today, the trail’s surface consists of either railroad ballast or limestone screenings, making it a perfect trail for ATV users as well as other outdoor recreation enthusiasts.
If you or anyone you bring along decides that using an ATV is not for them, do not worry. You don’t need to cancel your vacation plans. The Buffalo River State Trail is a multi-use trail that can also be used for mountain biking, walking, horseback riding, and even snowmobiling (when in season). This multi-use trail is a sure-to-please hit with a diverse group of outdoor adventurers.
