Located in the Mat-Su Region of Alaska, Big Lake North State Recreational Site is a great place for vacationers to spend the night while traveling throughout the state or to stay a few days and play.  This recreational area is located near Wasilla, which is only about 45 minutes north of the Anchorage area and Anchorage International airport.

Known as Alaska’s Year-Round Playground, many people flock to Big Lake North State Recreational Site for its many outdoor adventure and water sport opportunities. This area is especially popular with visitors during the summer months because you can enjoy some of the following activities:

  • Throwing your line into the lake and reeling in that world-class catch.
  • Water skiing or jet skiing from one end of the lake to the other, soaking in the sun while you play.
  • Floating or swimming along the water’s edge.
  • Boating on the lake—an extremely popular activity at the Big Lake North State Recreational Site.
  • Picnicking at one of 24 designated picnic sites.
  • Taking in the beautiful Alaska views (on a clear day, you may even be able to see Mt. McKinley from Big Lake).

Note that Big Lake North State Recreational Site gets quite populated on the weekends, so you may want to plan to arrive during a weekday or off-season months if you do not want to deal with a potential crowd. However, no matter when you visit Big Lake North, you will still be glad you got outside of Anchorage and enjoyed the beautiful scenery that surrounds the lake.

This recreational area has a lot to offer visitors who plan to camp, especially if you are traveling by motorhome rental in Alaska. Big Lake North State Recreational Site has 60 overnight parking sites that are RV accessible, with no size limits on Alaska RVs. The camping fee is $15 a vehicle per night, and you can camp for up to seven days, giving you plenty of time to explore the area.

While you may decide not to camp during the winter months, you can still find activities at Big Lake North State Recreational Site. You can experience dog mushing, perhaps for the first time. Or, try your hand at snowmobiling through the beautiful wooded and snow-covered areas throughout Big Lake North. Other winter activities include cross-country skiing and ice fishing.

During any time of year, this Anchorage-area attraction may be especially popular with your family or with individuals who want to enjoy the outdoors without backpacking in the wilderness. Big Lake North State Recreational Site really does offer year-round outdoor recreation, camping, and watersports, making it a great place to visit during your Alaskan vacation.
