If you are interested in learning about the culture of the Pueblo people of New Mexico, be sure to visit the Indian Pueblo Cultural Center & Museum in Albuquerque, NM. Out of respect for the Pueblo people, we recommend that you start first at the Museum so you can get to know about this unique demographic  before visiting an actual pueblo. This way, you can be better acquainted with the customs and etiquette practiced at the pueblos.

Many Albuquerque visitors do not realize that while the Pueblo community once extended from Colorado to Arizona, they are now mainly located in New Mexico at one of the 19 Pueblos in the Albuquerque area. While the Pueblo people allow visitors into their communities, you will want to be sure to do your homework on their history and proper etiquette before stopping by any of the 19 Pueblos, which is why we recommend that you first visit the Indian Pueblo Cultural Center and Museum. The Indian Pueblo Museum aims to give people a full history and better understanding and respect for the Pueblo people of New Mexico.

Just a short drive in your Albuquerque car rental to the center of Albuquerque, NM, the museum includes exhibits of some the Pueblo community’s artwork and other handiwork. Almost daily, you can witness an authentic Pueblo dance. The museum also has a small theatre that shows two short films that each tell the story of a unique Pueblo woman. You can also visit the Pueblo House, which offers groups and families a hands-on educational and interactive experience with life and history of the Pueblo community. From the historical to the contemporary exhibits, the Indian Pueblo Cultural Center & Museum can help you get better acquainted with this important part of New Mexico culture.

As already mentioned, the Indian Pueblo Cultural Center & Museum is located in the heart of Albuquerque—an easy drive in a New Mexico car rental from anywhere in or around Albuquerque. The museum is open Monday through Sunday from 9 am to 5 pm, but is closed on major holidays. The admission rates are as follows:

  • Adults (18+) – $6
  • Seniors (65+) – $5.50 (with ID)
  • New Mexico Residents (with ID) – $4
  • Children (ages 5-17) and Students (with ID) – $3
  • Children (under age 5) – Free

Note that the price of admission includes free entrance into any event, dance, or exhibit that occurs on the day of your visit; check out the Indian Pueblo Cultural Center website for up-to-date event and exhibit info. You will not have to pay more than the standard admission during your visit unless you decide to purchase a souvenir in The Pueblo Gift Shop or stop for some Native-fusion food stylings at The Pueblo Harvest Cafe, which serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner. You can check out the Indian Pueblo Cultural Center website for weekly cafe specials.

By visiting the Indian Pueblo Cultural Center & Museum, you will be able to get to know the heart of New Mexico’s history and culture. This attraction truly is an educational and eye-opening experience. Be sure to check it out next time you are in New Mexico.
