Madison, WI: The City of Four Lakes

by rlaurendeau on April 20, 2010

With average highs in the upper 70s and low 80s during the prime vacation months (June through August), Madison, Wisconsin continues to be a summer vacation destination for many who enjoy lake life. In fact, about 18 percent of the city’s acreage is covered by water. Lake Mendota, Lake Monona, Lake Waubesa, and Lake Kegonsa, make up the “Four Lakes” of Madison, WI, although only two of them  (Lake Mendota and Lake Monona) actually lie within the city limits; the other two are located just south of the city. In addition to these larger lakes, Madison is also home to several other smaller lakes that also make great vacation sites.

Due to this abundant lake water presence, Madison, WI has been named by some as “Lake City, Lake,” and this area has become a haven for visitors who enjoy all kinds of water recreation. One of the main lake activities in the Madison-Dane County area is fishing. All four of the major lakes have an variety of fish species, including walleye, northern pike, muskie, bluegill, smallmouth and largemouth bass, and others.

If fishing is not the name of your game, then maybe you will enjoy some watersport activities like sailing, boating, water skiing, or even jet skiing. You may decide to rent a place along one of the lakes, and if so, we recommend that you consider getting jet ski rentals in WI for a ton of lake fun.  You can determine how long or how many Wisconsin jet ski rentals you want, and you don’t need to worry about how to get your waverunner rental to the lake because many companies also provide trailers to haul your watersport craft.

Jet skiing is a great way to see Madison, Wisconsin’s many lakes and have a ton of fun in the process. However, you may just want to sit back and relax on the beach or one of the lakeside parks in the city. The lakes make a great place to get some of that needed rejuvenation that most people seek on their summer vacations.

If you need to get off the lake or are looking for some fun things to do in the evening, Madison is also host to a number of other attractions and activities. In terms of outdoor recreation, you can get a Wisconsin ATV rental and enjoy some of the off-road vehicle trails in the area, or you may want to visit a local state park and do some hiking or picnicking.

For some indoor entertainment and excitement, you can visit the Capitol’s lawn on Wednesday evenings for an orchestra performance or go to the Great Taste of the Midwest beer festival that takes place the second Saturday of August. You might also want to check out Madison’s live music scene in venues as small as coffee shops to as large as the Overture Center. Other activities in the area include great dining, shopping, independent art studios and galleries, comedy clubs, and other performing arts. For a lot of lake fun peppered with the vibrant Madison city culture, then Wisconsin’s “Lake City, Lake” may be just the place you need for your next vacation.
