Low-Cost Anchorage Activities

Are you planning a trip to Alaska but want to keep to a tight budget? Do you want to see some of the sights and soak in the culture without emptying your pockets? Then this post is for you! We’ll give you a list of some of the low-cost Anchorage attractions you may want to visit during your AK vacation as well as a few other cost-saving travel tips.

Let’s get started! And what better way to begin than to tell you about a few of the free opportunities in Anchorage. First stop: The Wild Salmon on Parade. While this exhibit is not an actual parade, it may feel like it as you walk the streets of Anchorage. Wild Salmon on Parade is actually a street exhibition of wild salmon sculptures created by local Alaska artists. Each sculpture is free to visit, and the displays are out from June through late August.

Another fun and free attraction is the Anchorage Market and Festival, held every Saturday and Sunday during the summer months. The Anchorage Market and Festival includes a wide array of local arts and crafts, both international and local food, street entertainers, fresh market foods, and more.

If you want to see the Alaskan countryside for free, what better way than to take advantage of one of AK’s scenic drives? We recommend that you take advantage of an affordable Alaska RV rental and enjoy a drive around the Anchorage area, where you can see wildlife, mountain ranges, thick forests, and much more. Two such scenic drives that depart from Anchorage are the Seward Highway and the Glenn Highway. Be sure to check both of them out!

As we mentioned above, you may want to look into a motorhome rental in Alaska. Renting an RV allows you the flexibility to see Alaska on your timetable and can be much more affordable than staying at hotels, resorts, or smaller inns in the Anchorage area. Plus, by staying in an Anchorage RV rental, you don’t have to worry about packing and unpacking when traveling from site to site. All you have to do is put your motorhome in drive and head out!

Some other low-cost activities (less than $10) in the Anchorage area include the following:

  • Cold Creek Mine – for only $5 per person, you can pan for gold and see some of the historic mining equipment and other artifacts that were once used in this area.
  • Flattop Mountain Trail – if you want to see some amazing views of Anchorage and the surrounding mountain areas, then head to the trails at Flattop Mountain. Parking is only $5 per vehicle, and you can enjoy not only the views but also many trails for hikers of all skill levels.
  • Eagle River Nature Center – this attraction is a great stop for wildlife lovers. You can take a self-guided tour of the black and brown bears, moose, eagles, and more for only $1 per person, or you can take advantage of a naturalist-guided tour for $10 per person.

Note that the above mentioned rates are subject to change based on the organization or company’s discretion. You will want to check their individual websites or call ahead for most recent rates and information.

These activities are only a few of the budget-friendly attractions you can find in and around the Anchorage area. If you come to Alaska for the views alone (which are free of charge once you get there!), you will go home happy and with money left to spare.
