Indiana's Pokagon State Park

Where can you enjoy Indiana lake life and outdoor recreation at its fullest? The answer is Pokagon State Park, located on the shore of the beautiful Lake James and Snow Lake in Angola, Indiana. This portion of northern Indiana is known for its many lakes surrounded by beautiful wooded areas, beaches, lake homes, parks, and more. Vacationers from all over Indiana, parts of the Midwest, and beyond travel to this IN lake land to enjoy boating, swimming, and much more.

You may not be able to find a better place to enjoy these lakes than at Indiana’s Pokagon State Park. A favorite visitor activity is renting a paddle boat and exploring Lake James and its shoreline; rowboat and pontoon rentals are also available. In addition to boating, fishing, swimming, canoeing, and other water activities, you can also enjoy many of the other outdoor recreational opportunities on site.  These activities include:

  • Picnicking at one of the many shelters and playground areas within the park.
  • Sunbathing or building sand castles at one of the Pokagon SP beaches.
  • Starting a game of beach volleyball at the sand volleyball court.
  • Going on an escorted horseback ride that begins at the saddle barn and takes you through the park trails.
  • Discovering more about Indiana plants and animals at the interpretive nature center.
  • Hiking through the beautiful Indiana woods, where you may just see some local wildlife.
  • Riding the toboggan (when in season), which can reach speeds up to 35-40 miles per hour. (Note: the toboggan is typically open weekends from the Friday after Thanksgiving through February, with extended holiday hours.)

If you want to stay a few days at Pokagon State Park, you can make a reservation at the Potawatomi Inn, stay at one of the park cabins, or set up camp in your Indiana RV rental at the park’s campground. The campground facilities includes 200 electric sites and also has a dump station and water fill station on the premises.

Pokagon State Park is located near Angola, Indiana, just off of Interstate 69. If you are traveling in your IN motorhome rental from the Indianapolis area, you should plan on about 2.5 hours for your trip. Many Indianapolis residents or visitors flying into Indianapolis airport may find this drive a nice distance—affordable, but still far enough away to feel like you’re on vacation and away from city life.

If you want to enjoy the best of Indiana’s lakes along with outdoor adventure and recreation, then Pokagon State Park may be your next vacation destination. Check out Indiana’s Department of Natural Resources web page on Pokagon State Park for the most recent reservation information, accommodation rates, and event listings.
