Visitors to the Lake Cascade area of west-central Idaho know that this area is known for its abundance of outdoor recreation opportunities. Fishing, jet skiing, hiking, camping, and much more are all within a short walk or drive away! One of the popular activities in this area is riding the ATV (all-terrain vehicle) trails throughout the state. While the Idaho has more than 20 ATV trails statewide, you can find at least three or four within easy driving distance of the Cascade, Idaho vacation area. In this post, we will describe these trails and also give you some insight into where you can find some great ATV rentals near Lake Cascade.

The first ATV trail near Lake Cascade is the Kirkham Ridge Trail located in the Boise National Forest, just about two hours south of Lake Cascade off Highway 21. This 35-mile trail is considered one of the best ATV trails within the Boise National Forest and may be where you want to begin your ATV adventure. The Kirkham Ridge Trail includes a climb through the Lowman fire area of 1989, a water crossing at Miller Creek, and twists and turns through a conifer forest. Note that the Kirkham Ridge Trail intersects with a few other ATV trails at different points along the path in the Boise National Forest.

Another trail you will want to check out is located about 2 hours northeast of Lake Cascade (20 miles east of McCall, ID) in the Payette National Forest. The Buckhorn Bar Trail (or Teapot Mountain Loop) is a 10-mile trail loop that wraps around Teapot Mountain near the Salmon River’s South Fork.  You can take your time and enjoy the gentle grade up and around the Teapot Mountain, even stopping along the way to fish in the Salmon River or enjoy a soak in the hot springs.

Last but not least, the Custer Motorway is a 40-mile ATV trail located about three hours east of Lake Cascade in the Salmon-Challist National Forest areas. Considered an historic trail, the Custer Motorway will take you on a great tour through old mining areas and towns along the Yankee Fork, Custer, and Bonanza areas. You can begin the trail either in Sunbeam, ID or in Challis, ID, both of which lead to the Yankee Fork area. Note that you will want to bring your own food and water because these services are not provided along the trail. Also, feel free to sport your swim apparel if you want to take a dip in the hot springs located near Sunbeam Dam.
