The Alaska Museum of Natural History is a non-profit organization committed to filling a “special need for science education in Alaska.” Residents and visitors alike can discover the real Alaska up close and personal at the Alaska Museum of Natural History. You and the rest of the members in your family can visit the museum at a relatively affordable rate. Admission costs $5 per adult and $3 per child, making it an affordable Anchorage attraction.
The main feature of the Museum of Natural History are its exhibits. In total, the museum has over 10,000 objects for you to discover. Here are some (but not all) of the displays you can expect to see:
- Bird Skeleton
- Snowy Owl Diorama
- Coastal/Oceans Diorama
- Archaeopteryx (Feathered Reptile) Skeleton
- Black Bear
- Duckbill Dinosaur
- Ice Age Lion Skull (new exhibit!)
In addition to its displays, the Alaska Museum of Natural History also has other educational opportunities, such as the volcano simulator where you can create your own erupting volcano. Other programs or educational opportunities include displays on the Dinosaurs of Alaska or the Broken Mammoth Archeological Site.
Summer events at the Alaska Museum of Natural History includes the:
- TyRUNasaurus 10k & Fossil 5k Run – takes place at Kincaid Park on August 10, 2010.
- Monsters of the Sea – a special display that runs from August 3 through 8. You can discover giant sea creatures that put animals like the great white shark to shame.
