Horseback Riding in the Newark Area

Aiming to find a new and different outdoor activity that everyone in your family or vacationing group will enjoy?  Newark has just the opportunity.  Many horse ranches and stables can be found in the surrounding Newark, New Jersey area, and they welcome visitors and vacationers. All the ranches provide not only numerous trails for riding but also fun, group events and individual lessons.

One ranch you can visit is the Double D Guest Ranch, located in Blairstown, New Jersey. This 75-acre ranch is located northwest of Newark and would be about an hour drive from the city. Experienced ranchers will teach you how to saddle your horse and then take you on one of many trails, possibly either through the woods or down by the river.

At the Double D Guest Ranch, a variety of riding packages are available. Ride for an hour, two hours, half day, or full day and customize your trip exactly to your liking. Horses come for the very experienced and the first-time rider. Owner Phil Duke’s goal for his ranch is to bring a western experience to the East Coast area.

A second horseback riding experience can be found at Legends Riding Stable. This stable is located to the north of Newark. Take a one hour drive in your 12 passenger van rental, and you will arrive at your destination!  A variety of trail rides are offered through the wilderness.

Legends Riding Stable specializes in providing many tame ponies and horses for young riders and beginners.  Tell your children to ask for Chocolate Chip, Legends’ famous pony. Also, brand new for this summer will be a petting zoo, where many different animals can be visited up close.

Lastly, van rentals can be taken down to Echo Lake Stables. Echo Lake is known for their night riding adventure. This evening ride includes a horse ride by streams and trees before ending the night at a campfire. At the campfire, there will be a western cookout and enjoyable games. If you are looking to ride during the daytime, trail rides or individual lessons with an instructor in the ring are offered.  Or try a hay ride or carriage ride.  While you are there, don’t forget to see the famous horses that were used not only in movies but also in Super Bowl commercials!

Horseback riding is a neat way to get off the beaten path to see parts of the Newark area that you might not otherwise get to see.  Enjoy spending a day of your family vacation relaxing on a horse in the great outdoors. Reservations are required at many places, so plan ahead by booking your trip now and take advantage of all Newark offers!
