Flying L Guest Ranch

Have you ever watched a Western movie and wished you could somehow be there and experience the country like they experienced it? If this is something you’ve always wanted to do, check out a dude ranch. The state of Texas has many dude ranches that are open and ready for those looking to take a Western vacation!

One such dude ranch is called the Flying L Guest Ranch.  This is a great place to spend quality time with family and friends.  The Flying L became a dude ranch back in 1946 when Jack Lapham bought it from Polish settlers. He was a retired Air Corps colonel and had always dreamed to create a place for people to go to “find themselves.”  An airstrip was also built, and Lapham ran a flying school as well. This is how the ranch earned its name.

The Flying L Guest Ranch became an extremely popular place years ago and was visited by many famous war heroes, country singers, and movie stars. Famous visitors included John Wayne, Ray Price and Willie Nelson. It was even featured in the 1947 issue of Life Magazine. Today, this dude ranch is host for a variety of occasions including family vacations, family reunions, corporate groups, golf groups and tournaments, youth groups, church groups, and day groups.

Tons of fun can be had at the dude ranch. Try hiking or horseback riding and enjoy miles of natural woodlands. You are sure to see lots of deer, opossums, and squirrels. You can even take an overnight horseback riding trip to the ranch’s Hilltop Gazebo.

Try out one of Flying L’s new attractions – the Lone Star Lagoon. This new water park offers many different pools, a Western theme, and a large, curly slide. Adults and children alike are sure to enjoy cooling off at the pool.

You wouldn’t think a dude ranch would have a golf course, but this ranch definitely does!  In fact, it was voted in 2008 and 2009 by Golf Digest as one of the best places to play. Eighteen holes reside in the rolling hills and large oak trees. And after you golf, try out the Spike N’ Spur Grill and enjoy your dinner on the patio deck. Here you have a great view of the hill country sunsets.

After you arrive in Texas and visit the Flying L Guest Ranch, be sure to also check out Austin campers.  There are numerous places to camp all around Texas as you explore the land including McKinney Falls State Park and Windy Point Park.  Austin RV rentals will also come in handy. If you decide to rent an RV, definitely spend a night or so at Austin Lone Star RV Resort for excellent hospitality and amenities.

You will have an outstanding time visiting a dude ranch and spending time outdoors at several area state parks. Texas offers a beautiful scenic vacation for you and your whole family. So pack up your cowboy boots and cowboy hat and start look forward to a wonderful time!
