Dine in the Dark at One of New York City’s Newest Restaurants

by Carmen Corbin on December 12, 2011

If you’re a frequent visitor to New York City, you may think you’ve conquered the culinary scene.  You’ve sampled the famous bagels, folded up an authentic slice of pizza, and even hustled your way into an upscale restaurant without a reservation.  But you haven’t seen it all.  If you’re searching for a new dining experience that’s literally a feast for the senses (but only four of them!), you can find it at Dans Le Noir restaurant.

If you remember any of your high school French, you’ll conclude that Dans Le Noir means “in the dark.”  No mood lighting here, no dinner by candlelight and no dimly lit corner tables.  Patrons eat every bite and sip every drink in total darkness.  The idea is to experience food in a whole new way.  By depriving ourselves of sight, our other senses become heightened.  Every flavor and aroma, every sound and texture comes alive to create a unique dining adventure.

Sorry, Adults Only

With established restaurants in Paris, London, Barcelona and St. Petersburg (Russia), Dans Le Noir just opened the doors of its New York City restaurant in early December, 2011.  Located in the Fashion District, it can be found about three blocks off Times Square in Manhattan (246 W. 38th Street, between 7th and 8th Avenues).   Due to insurance regulations, the restaurant can only accommodate patrons aged 18 and up.

Guest enter the lighted bar and reception area, where they place their orders from a “surprise” menu.  A selection of gourmet meat, fish, seafood and vegetarian dishes are available, although you don’t know exactly what you’ll be served until it arrives (just part of the fun!).  Blind or visually impaired servers lead guests into the completely dark dining room, where they provide helpful tips about eating in the dark.  The chefs are all sighted, and work in a fully lit kitchen!

Although Dans Le Noir would make a great destination for a blind date (we just couldn’t resist that one), it’s also a fun way to connect with friends, coworkers and family.  To avoid parking issues, we suggest a 15-passenger van rental for large groups (call the restaurant ahead of time for group reservations), or an SUV or mini rental van for smaller groups.  Plan ahead if you’re coming in from Long Island, as traffic can be tricky.

Let us know if you’ve enjoyed a dark dining experience at Dans Le Noir.  We welcome your suggestions on other New York travel destinations and activities as well!
