Prospect Park Zoo in NYC

by April Shuttleworth on December 22, 2011

Several weeks ago we dedicated a blog to Prospect Park in New York City. In it, we touched briefly on the zoo you’ll find here called Prospect Park Zoo. Today, we’d like to walk you through the zoo in more detail.

Prospect Park Zoo is proud to offer many animal exhibits including an exhibit called Animal Lifestyles. Here you will find baboon families, monkeys with bright orange fur, and Pallas cats from Central Asia.

Exhibits at Prospect Park Zoo:

Discovery Trail is another animal exhibit here in this NY Zoo. Animals you’ll encounter here include the black-tailed prairie dog, yellow-footed rock wallaby, North American river otter, Western gray kangaroo, red panda, and Indian peafowl. Also in this exhibit is the aviary where you can see cockatoos nesting and peacocks strutting around.

A third exhibit is called Barn and Garden. Here you can have an animal encounter from Friday through Monday at noon during the summer months. You and your kids can sit on a haystack and meet a zookeeper and favorite animals.

Ever tried milking a cow? Well now you can if you visit from mid-May through mid-October. Each station is equipped with a stool and bucket; all you will need to do is step right up! Barn and Garden is also where you can come to the barn stage to listen to animal stories or play a game of zoo bingo.

Visit the zoo in your NYC car rental in the winter (Nov. 6 – March 30) from 10:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. daily. Or you can visit during the summer (March 31 – Nov. 4) from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday or 10:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. on weekends and holidays.

Admission to Prospect Park Zoo is $8.00 for adults, $5.00 for children ages 3-12, and free for those children under 3. One of the highlights of those who visit the zoo is many times the sea lion feedings.

Head to the heart of the park to say hello to a group of California sea lions. Three daily feeding demonstrations are held at 11:30 a.m., 2:00 p.m., and 4:00 p.m. You and your family will love watching these sea lions high-fiving the zookeepers, showing off by diving, and catching fish in their mouths. You can even catch a snack at the zoo café near the sea lion demonstration to fuel up and relax.
