Saranac Lake Winter Carnival

by Carmen Corbin on January 25, 2012

New York visitors or residents looking for a fun winter getaway should head north to the Saranac Lake Winter Carnival (held this year from February 3-12, 2012), which is one of the longest running winter events in the country.  Since 1897, the residents of Saranac Lake sought out to beat the winter blues by celebrating with community parades, sporting competitions and the famous Ice Palace.

Building the Ice Palace

In the heart of the Adirondack Mountains (not far from Lake Placid), Saranac Lake is surrounded by pristine mountain lakes, which were a source of ice before the advent of modern refrigeration.  The village’s experience in the ice harvesting industry led to the annual construction of the Ice Palace during the Winter Carnival.  Today, volunteers cut, transport and maneuver large blocks of ice to create a crystal masterpiece that reflects each year’s carnival theme.  The palace becomes even more beautiful as a display of colored lights adorns it each evening, accentuating each corner and turret.

Carnival Activities

Although most events take place on the weekend, you’ll also find entertainment during the week with events like torchlight skiing, innertube races, skating and snowshoe races.

The 4-mile Ice Palace Fun Run is one of the first activities to kick off the festival, followed by a curling exhibition on Lake Flower.  After you’ve warmed up with a cup of hot cocoa, it’s time to get serious and head on over to the Harrietstown Town Hall for the 19th annual Chocolate Festival.  After the sun goes down, don’t miss the beautiful scene at the Lighting of the Ice Palace, followed by a spectacular winter fireworks display.

Witness an amazing display of talent at the Paul Smith’s College Woodsmen’s Exhibition, held on each Saturday during the carnival.  Competitive collegiate lumberjacks demonstrate skills such as ax throwing, chopping, sawing and log birling.

Saranac Lake is located in northern New York state, approximately 300 miles north of New York City via I-87 (then head west on Hwy. 73 at exit 30).  For a fun group getaway, contact a local rental dealer for information and rates on 12-passenger van rentals or mini van rentals – that way you’ll have more people to take turns driving!

Let us know if you’ve enjoyed a visit to the Saranac Lake Winter Carnival.  We welcome your suggestions on other New York travel destinations and activities as well!
